Collection of letters and manuscripts related to Edgar Allan Poe, 1827-1849.

Collection consists of two autograph manuscript poems (Dreams and The Lake, MA 644.1), an 1849 promissory note signed by Poe (MA 644.2), five autograph letters signed (MA 644.3-7), and a slip of paper with his signature (MA 644.17). Collection also contains one autograph letter signed from John Reuben Thompson concerning the last six months of Poe's life (MA 644.8), and eight autograph letters signed from Thomas Wills White, the editor of the Southern Literary Messenger; these letters date to 1835, just after Poe began working there. With 12 engravings.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American author, poet, and critic. In 1834 Poe married his cousin Virginia, who was not quite fourteen at the time, and began seriously seeking a means of supporting "his family."
